To explain the theory of KIMI, a traditional therapeutic theory of Korean Traditional medicine, the role of monoamine oxidase (MAO) in thermoregulation was examined. From the Korean medicinal plants that have been traditionally used for treatments of brain diseases such as dementia, hypertension, and palsy, 171 kinds of cold drugs were screened for inhibition against MAO activity, and several plants showed significant inhibitory activities on MAO prepared from rat brain and liver in vitro. The inhibitory activity was measured using serotonin and benzylamine as substrates. The results of this study showed a scientific evidence on the theory of KIMI.
